Campaign to stop £17m Whittington Hospital building sell off

2 February 2013

Labour MPs are queuing up to support a campaign that is fighting against sell offs of some of Whittington Hospital’s buildings.

Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn, Islington South, Emily Thornberry, Holborn and St Pancras MP, Frank Dobson and Tottenham’s David Lammy are due to speak at the Defend Whittington Hospital Coation public meeting on 12 February.

They will be joined by Cllr Catherine West, leader of Islington Council, Candy Udwin from London Keep Our NHS Public, a speaker from Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign and Shirley Franklin from DWHC.

The meeting will mobilise opposition against a recent decision by the hospital board to raise money by selling £17 million of buildings.

The board decision will lead to ward closures, massive reduction of maternity provision, loss of wards for the elderly, total loss of staff accommodation and huge staff cuts.

MP Jeremy Corbyn has raised public concern about the issue in Parliament through an Early Day Motion on 29 January. The motion is unlikely to be voted on but calls on the government to financially maintain health services in Camden, Haringey and Islington.

MPs speaking at the meeting signed the motion as well as seven other Labour MPs, including John McDonnell, Dennis Skinner and Glenda Jackson.

Frank Dobson MP is speaking at another emergency meeting at Camden Town Hall, on 4 February at 6.30.

The campaign is also urging local activists to get signatures for a petition calling on the Board to stop the closures.

DHWC chair, Shirley Franklyn said:

A lot of people are really steaming about the disgraceful decision of the Board of the Whittington Hospital to sell off the buildings. This will be a permanent loss to our hospital. This is on top of massive staff cuts.

“It’s no good the Chief Executive of the Hospital talking about moving things into the community. This will still mean a massive loss of beds and huge staff cuts, and insufficient maternity and geriatric provision.“

Tabled before the House of Commons, 29 January 2013
That this House expresses its concern about the proposed sale of large portions of the Whittington Hospital site and the potential loss of staff and beds as part of an overall strategy announcement reported in the local media recently; notes the negative impact this is bound to have on employment and patient care in an area with increasing health needs and a rising population; deplores the complete lack of consultation with elected representatives, the public and hospital staff in the lead up to the announcement; acknowledges that the Whittington is a much loved, needed and well-used district general hospital; and calls on the Government to intervene to ensure there will be sufficient money available to maintain services in Camden, Haringey and Islington.
